ITANJ (Italian Teachers of Italian of New Jersey)

For the AATI Fall 2021 Newsletter

Submitted by: Anna Ranieri

ITANJ would like to wish its members and all educators and enthusiastic lovers of the Italian language and culture a successful and productive school year. In an attempt to help teachers and students transition to a more normal school opening but, with the full understanding that new challenges have presented themselves over the course of the past eighteen months, ITANJ held its annual Primo Incontro Idee Nuove per una Nuova Ripartenza with that in mind. The event, held virtually via Zoom for the second consecutive year in August, was truly an invaluable contribution which exposed teachers to new and innovative tools for teaching the language and for surmounting the gaps that might have been created due to last year’s virtual school year.

Roberta Pennasilico, a favorite ITANJ webinar speaker, presented Strategies to Navigate the Return to the Classroom followed by Fiorella Bologno’s L’Eredita` del Virtuale, Steven La Peruta’s Flipped Classroom Approach, and Teresa Del Giudice and Francesca Sivano’s Ways to Assess, Review, and Engage in starting the new school year. Additionally, participants were able to choose between a round table discussion on incorporating Italian music or utilizing social media in breakout rooms.

Participants were given a rich and extensive plethora of materials and strategies arming them with wonderful ideas and inspiration to tackle a school year which presents new challenges but also exciting innovations. Participants’ responses and feedback to the creativity of the presentations were particularly enthusiastic.

On the future webinar scene ITANJ is happy to have Maria Borsa presenting on Escape Rooms and on December 2 Roberta Pennasilico will be back to present incorporating Italian culture in the classroom. ITANJ’s Primo Incontro materials were available for purchase for a limited time as are the webinars it continues to present in conjunction with the AATI Long Island chapter.

In the spring ITANJ held its “Virtually Italian” Italian Language Culture Day in lieu of the traditional live event which students looked forward to every spring.

Students who study Italian from across the state of New Jersey submitted their entries, a mixed media video which really expressed both language skills and technical creativity, and had a chance to win monetary prizes for their group and their respective schools. The event was held in conjunction with Montclair Sate University and the Coccia Institute and the top three winning entry videos were posted on social media. First prize went to students from Frank Ciccarrell Academy in Elizabeth with their entry Che tempo Fa?” second place was held by Red Bank Regional HS with L’Italia Virtuale, and third place to St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City with Che Fine Hanno Fatto? At the bottom of this article are the winning students names.

The Borsa committee this year will continue to offer grants for teachers and are happy to announce that they working on plans to offer a HS scholarship and college scholarship for students. Additional information on this will be made available to ITANJ members at a future date.

If you go to the ITANJ webpage, you will find that there is always something happening at ITANJ.  ITANJ also keeps its members informed of everything Italian, whether it is linguistic, cultural, social, or methodology through its daily email blast.  More details are available online at itanj.org, twitter hash tag (www.itanj14) or Face book.
