AATI's Mission in English

The American Association of Teachers of Italian is a professional organization of scholars worldwide who contribute to the multi-disciplinary field of Italian Studies through teaching, research, and service. Our mission is to promote, advance, and preserve the study of Italian language, literature, and culture in its multiple historical and contemporary manifestations. The AATI achieves these goals by sponsoring meetings, seminars, conferences, competitions, workshops, national examinations, the National Italian Honor Society, and by publishing the quarterly journal Italica, dedicated to excellence in teaching and research in all areas of Italian studies. The AATI also collaborates with other professional organizations to accomplish its objectives.

L’Associazione Americana degli insegnanti di Italiano è un’istituzione professionale alla quale aderiscono docenti delle università e delle scuole di ogni ordine e grado di tutto il mondo. Essa promuove e sviluppa l’attività inerente a settori multidisciplinari degli studi d’italianistica attraverso l’insegnamento e la ricerca, offrendo altresì assistenza ai suoi iscritti. Le finalità statutarie dell’Associazione consistono nella tutela, promozione e diffusione dello studio nel mondo della lingua italiana, della letteratura e della cultura italiana nei suoi molteplici aspetti. L’AATI persegue i suoi scopi statutari organizzando incontri, seminari, convegni, concorsi, workshop e collaborando alla rivista trimestrale Italica. Questa rivista pubblica contributi mirati riguardanti la ricerca letteraria in tutti i settori dell’italianistica e la pedagogia dell’insegnamento. L’AATI, inoltre, per perseguire i propri obiettivi, collabora con altre organizzazioni professionali.

Promuovere, diffondere e tutelare la lingua e la cultura italiana

AATI Vision Statement (2015-2020)

The AATI is dedicated to achieving the following objectives:

  • Increase membership by 10% annually, for five years (accumulative).
  • Establish a defined Graduate Mentoring Program, Junior Faculty Mentoring Program, and Graduate Student Caucus.
  • Social Media Goals: create a new website, which incorporates the newly approved brand, along with a Facebook page, LinkedIn page, and a Twitter account.
  • Within our new website, create professional development resource pages for both K-12 and graduate students (this could include a listserv, wiki page, reviews, etc).
  • Re-examine the high school and college exams/contests, incorporating diverse writing genres.
  • Establish a permanent address for the organization.
  • Create a continuous scholarship program funding $5,000 – $10,000 for refreshment courses. [this is coming from a private fundraising fund]
  • Promote our organizational visibility through the sale of a series of branded items.
  • Create an online journal/forum where conference proceedings would be published
