Biography:

Sara Mattavelli teaches Italian language and culture courses at Duke University. Her research interests focus on second language acquisition, literacy-based approaches to L2 instruction, language program direction and coordination, teacher training, contemporary Italian literature, and gender studies.

Dr. Mattavelli earned a Ph.D. in Italian with a minor in Second Language Acquisition from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has a master’s degree in Italian from the University of Virginia, and a laurea magistrale in Language Sciences and Foreign Literatures from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan.

From 2017 to 2020 she served as regional representative in the MLA Delegate Assembly, and she is currently a member of the AATI Advocacy Committee.
