Sara Mattavelli is Lecturer of Italian Studies at William & Mary. She teaches Italian language and culture courses at all levels as well as classes in English for the TESOL program and the study abroad program in Florence that she currently directs. She is the Faculty Advisor for the Italian House and the W&M chapter of Gamma Kappa Alpha. From 2017 to 2020 she served as regional representative in the MLA Delegate Assembly and she is currently a member of the AATI Advocacy Committee. 
Dr. Mattavelli earned a Ph.D. in Italian with a minor in Second Language Acquisition from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has a Master’s degree in Italian from the University of Virginia, and a laurea magistrale in Language Sciences and Foreign Literatures from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan. 
Her research interests focus on second language acquisition, language program direction and coordination, teacher training, contemporary Italian literature, and women and gender studies.
